It is best
to start the walk around the spring in Cieplice in the centre of
Piastowski Square,
where Schaffgotchs' Palace stands (1784-88).
The building was erected on the site of the former
seat of the family, which burnt down in a great fire.
There are two coat-of-arms cartouches over the entrance to this charming
Classicist building.
The object is not open to visitors.
There are
two churches at opposing ends of the square.
Saint John
the
Baptist
Church was built in the years 1712-1714
by the former hosts of Cieplice, the Order of Cistercians. The style of the
interior furnishing of the church is Rococo.
When inside, one should note the
painting in the altar major by Michał Willmann called the Silesian Rafael.
The
Evangelical church is very modestly furnished and ornamented.
One of the
u
ndoubted attractions, in particular in the period from spring to autumn, is
the spring park, adjacent to
Piastowski
Square and the Schaffgotchs' Palace. It is the
favourite place to walk of health resort visitors who use the beneficial spring
water in Cieplice. The first mentions of the palace French garden are from the
mid 18th century. In the year 1838, the park was thoroughly
redeveloped in line with English style concept.
The central
point of the park is The Gallery and the Theatre. This is a Classicist object
designed by Carl Gottfried, erected in
the year 1799, currently housing a
restaurant and the animation stage of the Jeleniogórski Theatre, where chamber
music concerts are often organised.
Walking
along the
main alley of the park, we reach a street. On the other side of this
street starts a second park complex, referred to as
Norwegian, from the name of
the pavilion which was built there at the beginning of the 20th
century as an imitation of the "Frogenersaeteren" restaurant near
Oslo. These days, a
Natural History Museum is located there.
