KARKONOSZ – THE MASTER OF THE KARKONOSZE MOUNTAINS

Czechs call him Kronos, Germans Rübezahl, and Poles Karkonosz, Rzepiór, or Liczyrzepa. The Spirit of the Karkonosze Mountains has as many names as forms he can take on. Now he is a gnome or a ghoul, only to change in the blink of an eye into a handsome young man or a kind-hearted old man strolling through the forests of the Karkonosze Mountains. The moods of the Mountain Spirit are equally unpredictable. Karkonosz can be generous and express his gratitude for a little help by throwing gold stones to a tourist, but he can be vengeful and stupid as well. However, these evil features are not inherent in his character, but result from a lack of understanding of the nature and the attitude of human beings. Karkonosz is a simple-minded gnome, who sees everything in black and white. Therefore, he rewards good deeds and punishes the bad ones. Keep this in mind when you traverse the trails of the Karkonosze Mountains. Pay special attention to Śnieżne Jamy, today known as Śnieżne Kotły, where the master of the Karkonosze Mountains has his abode. Not all human beings are able to see the grandness of this edifice. You need to have an open mind and heart and good intentions. Only then will you be able to see the magnitude of the Karkonosze Mountains, their power, and the beauty of the garden created by the Mountain Spirit.
